ABHA ID vs ABHA Number vs ABHA Address: What's the Difference?

ABHA ID, ABHA Number and ABHA Address sound similar but serve different purposes. Understand the difference with this simple guide.

ABHA ID vs ABHA Number vs ABHA Address explained

If you've ever created an ABHA or tried to connect your health records, you've probably come across three terms: ABHA ID, ABHA Number and ABHA Address.

At first, they can be confusing. Is your ABHA ID the 14-digit number? What is the @abdm address? And why do you need both?

The difference is actually quite simple.

ABHA ID → Your digital health identity

ABHA Number → Your unique 14-digit number

ABHA Address → Your easy-to-remember digital health username

Here's what each one means and how they work together.

    What Is an ABHA ID?

ABHA stands for Ayushman Bharat Health Account. It is part of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), India's digital health ecosystem.

People commonly use the term ABHA ID when talking about their digital health identity. When you create an ABHA, you receive a unique 14-digit ABHA Number.

Think of your ABHA as a way of identifying yourself within the ABDM ecosystem. Instead of your health information being associated only with individual hospitals or labs, ABHA can help connect supported digital health records to you.

For example, if you visit participating hospitals or laboratories, supported records generated during those visits can be linked to your ABHA and made available through compatible digital health services.

Creating an ABHA is free and voluntary.

    What Is an ABHA Number?

Your ABHA Number is the unique 14-digit number associated with your Ayushman Bharat Health Account.

    For example: 12-3456-7890-1234 (example only)

You can think of it as your unique identifier within the ABDM ecosystem.

It helps participating healthcare systems identify the correct individual when supported health records are created, linked or exchanged.

Because the ABHA Number is unique to you, it is different from a phone number, Aadhaar number or hospital registration number.

So when someone refers to their “ABHA ID number,” they are usually talking about this 14-digit ABHA Number.

    What Is an ABHA Address?

The ABHA Address is different from your 14-digit ABHA Number.

It is an easy-to-remember digital health address that can look like:

    yourname@abdm

Instead of remembering a long number every time, an ABHA Address provides a simpler identity that can be used when interacting with supported digital health and Personal Health Record (PHR) services.

Think of it a little like an email address.

Your email address helps other services know where to reach you digitally. Similarly, your ABHA Address helps identify you for supported health-record exchange within the ABDM ecosystem.

However, an ABHA Address is not an email address and should not be used like one.

ABHA ID vs ABHA Number vs ABHA Address

Here's the easiest way to see the difference:

Used with supported PHR and health-record services

Why Do You Have Both an ABHA Number and an ABHA Address?

This is where the difference becomes useful.

Your ABHA Number provides a unique way to identify you within the digital health ecosystem, while your ABHA Address provides an easier way to interact with supported digital health services.

You can picture the relationship like this:

You don't need to understand all the technology happening behind the scenes. In most cases, the health app or service you're using guides you through the process.

How Does ABHA Help With Your Health Records?

The important part of ABHA isn't simply having another ID.

Its usefulness becomes clearer when your health records are spread across different places.

You might have a blood test from one laboratory, a prescription from another hospital and a discharge summary from somewhere else. When participating healthcare providers support ABDM, eligible digital records can be connected to your ABHA.

With your consent, supported records can then be accessed or shared through compatible PHR apps and digital health services.

This can make it easier to maintain a more connected health history instead of depending only on paper reports, WhatsApp files, emails or records stored separately by different providers.

It is also important to remember that having an ABHA does not mean every hospital record automatically becomes available. Record availability depends on whether the healthcare provider participates in the relevant ABDM services and whether the record has been linked.

Which one do you actually give at a hospital counter?

Your ABHA address, almost always. It's what the registration desk's app is built to scan or type in, and it's what routes the consent request to you. Your ABHA number stays in the background as the record it all resolves to — you'd only need it for edge cases like recovering account access or an older paper-based process that hasn't caught up with the address system yet.

ABHA ID, Number and Address—Made Simple

The terminology can look confusing at first, but the distinction is straightforward:

ABHA ID is your overall digital health identity, your ABHA Number uniquely identifies it, and your ABHA Address helps you interact with supported digital health-record services.

Together, they form part of India's ABDM ecosystem, designed to make supported health records easier to connect and access digitally with the individual's consent.
